Shirley was born Shirley Lou Horell on July 10, 1932, in Akron, Ohio where she lived with her parents . She spent her early childhood days in Ohio, until the family moved to Pennsylvania to be near her grandmother. She started attending school in Cuyahoga Falls and loved living in Pennsylvania near a beautiful river. She remembers spending time with her grandmother who loved to garden.
After the family moved to California, Shirley attended Inglewood High School where she played tennis and enjoyed bowling. After graduating High School, Shirley attended and later graduated from El Camino College with an Associates of Arts Degree.
As a young adult, Shirley went to work for a phone company where she met and married her first husband Ken Miller in 1955 who later became a LA County Sheriff. They adopted their daughter Linda, and later had two sons, Ed and Alan. The family lived in Playa del Rey and then moved to Torrance, CA.
In 1971 the family moved to Lake Isabella where Shirley was a homemaker who actively participated in her daughter and son’s sports activities. She became a Job’s Daughter Rep, as well as a Cub Scout Leader. She was also a Rainbow Girls Mother Advisor.
Shirley was always very proud of her three children, Linda, Ed and Alan, and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also very proud of being active in Eastern Star as a Worthy Matron (3 times), and as The Deputy Grand Matron after that. Shirley became active with a National Cancer Fund Raiser, making blankets and pads for patients. She also spent some time working at the Senior Center in Lake Isabella volunteering for the Senior Service program until she could no longer work.
Shirley is survived by her 2 sons, 2 daughters-in-law, 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Shirely was a beautiful person inside and out and she will be greatly missed
