July 24, 1946 - January 21, 2022
Shirle (Kathie, Mom, or Grandma to her family) was a lifelong resident of Bakersfield, except for college at the California Hospital School of Nursing and USC, and a hardworking Registered Nurse at local hospitals, visiting nurses, and the state prison at Wasco.
Missed by many, Shirle was a natural-born leader, becoming Honored Queen in Job’s Daughters, organizing a Bakersfield High School reunion, representing state prison Registered Nurses at negotiations in Sacramento, and making sure her two sons and everyone who ever traveled with her saw a lot more than they expected.
She was also a big fan of contests and sweepstakes. After many long hours, she was one of the last two touching the car they hoped to win. Her one brother will never forget accidentally distracting her. She won lots of merchandise and numerous trips, including a cruise to Mexico, a trip to the Dominican Republic, and one to fly her other brother and his family to Bakersfield for Thanksgiving.
Family mattered most to Shirle. She kept traditions and started new ones. She saved everything with a memory attached to it. She stayed close to her parents until their death. She was interested in everything about her niece’s and nephews’ lives. And she sought to do everything in her power for her two sons and her four grandsons, even on a very tight budget. In 1974, as a single mom, Shirle purchased a home in Bakersfield.
Shirle is preceded in death by her brother, Rod Gretlein; her father, Robert Joe Gretlein; and her mother, Mona Darlene Hanes Gretlein. She is survived by her sons, Adam Noel Decker and Jeffrey Dale Hall; her grandsons, Ethan and Ben Decker and Nathan and Tyler Hall; and a great- grandchild. Also by her brother, David (Elaine) Gretlein, and their children, Alyssa and Ryan Gretlein, and her sister-in-law, Patty Newbold, and their son, Alex Gretlein and his three children. Her many cousins also mourn her passing.
Shirle’s remains were buried beside her mother’s in Hillcrest Memorial Memorial Park on July 22, 2022. July 24, 1946 - January 21, 2022
