With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Kenneth Thomas Sims, known lovingly as Ken, who was called home to our Heavenly Father on August 19, 2025, in Bakersfield, California, at the age of 78.
Ken was born on October 27, 1946, in Portland, Oregon, to Glen and Amanda Sims. The family spent a short time in Utah before moving to Greenville, CA, where he spent most of his childhood. The family then settled in Yuba City, CA, where he graduated from high school.
Ken earned a Bachelor's degree in History from Brigham Young University, followed by a Master of Science in Social Work from Tennessee State University. He began his career as a Social Worker in Bakersfield, CA, where he would reside until his death, dedicating himself to helping others through difficult times. He went on to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, counseling individuals and families, including those struggling with drug addictions. His career path was a true reflection of his character. He was compassionate, generous, and dedicated to helping others, offering his time and care even to those who could not pay.
Ken was a gifted singer. As a senior in high school, he was chosen to sing in the school’s a cappella madrigal choir of twelve. As a young adult, he sang in a barbershop quartet. He continued this passion as a selected member of the Bakersfield Masterworks Chorale.
As a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his faith guided his life, his service, and his love for others. He married Tamera Leigh Shore on June 16, 1979, in the Los Angeles Temple.
Ken was known for his easygoing nature, sharp wit, and sense of humor. He was a man of quiet strength and infinite patience. He loved watching football, basketball, and hockey. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially his wife, Tammy. As a gifted craftsman, he created beautiful treasures for his family and friends through woodworking and the art of crafting rings with precious stones. Most recently, he found joy in 3D printing, creating unique pieces he loved to share.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Amanda Sims; his brother, Bruce Sims; and his sons, Brent Sims and Joel Amado.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Tamera Sims; his daughter, Suzette Gaddis (Brian); his son, Rick Amado; his daughter-in-law, Lesa Amado; his grandchildren Sarah Daves (Dustin), Joshua Gaddis (Ashley), Kayla Gaddis, Derek Collins, Jeramiah Edwards (Kayla), and Guinevere Sims; his great-grandchildren Marshall Adams, Ronan Daves, Kloe Edwards, Kamryn Edwards, and Kyndall Edwards; his brothers Paul Sims (Kay), and Ronald Sims (Carolyn); his sister Glenda Grover (Bill); and many nieces and nephews.
