Helen Loretta Berglind (Smith) born January 19, 1936 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada passed away peacefully May 24, 2021 in Bakersfield, California at the age of 85.
Helen had a zest for life from the time she was a little girl, becoming a mom, grandma and Gigi were her greatest joy. She loved her family more than life itself and had a heart for loving others that came into her life as she referred to them as her extended family. Helen was caring, kind, creative and always made herself available to offer a helping hand to others. Helen was employed as a secretary for many years in Canada and the United States and in the late 70s Helen ventured out relocating in Oahu, Hawaii opening her own successful furniture business "Wall Systems Hawaii". While living on the island, Helen enjoyed attending jazz festivals, the beautiful beaches, and playing golf. Ten years later, Helen relocated to the mainland to be close to her growing family. Helen loved to try new recipes, she enjoyed knitting while watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, the Bachelor and HGTV and was always up to challenging anyone to an occasional game of cribbage. She loved playing Dino, Tiki Torch and Lobster Larry at her favorite Casino’s. Each morning Helen would do a daily crossword puzzle on her computer followed by numerous hours playing Pogo games. Helen was a #1 fan of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren cheering them on with their school activities and sports. Helen enjoyed spending time relaxing at the property at Whatcom Meadows. Helen is survived by her 3 children, Brenda (Mike) O'Bannon of Bakersfield, California, Geri (Alan) Porter of Baker City, Oregon, and Marshall (Colleen) Shields of Richmond, B.C., Canada, 15 grandchildren and their spouses, and 29 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents William and Euphemia Smith, former husbands Joe Shields and Bob Berglind, and grandson Ryan Blanchard - Law. Helen’s memories will be cherished as she will be deeply missed by her family and others who loved her. May God wrap his loving arms around her and guide her into her new journey as her work on earth is done. A Celebration to honor Helen’s life will follow later, due to the United States and Canada’s current border closure.
