Esther Madeline Hupp was born on July 1, 1923 in Hanford, California. She was the third of six daughters born to Joseph and Angelina Robles. Esther passed away on March 12, 2024 in Bakersfield, California. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred, in December 2014, after 70 years of marriage. She is survived by her three children, Jude (Jeanine) Hupp and Angela Rose Hupp of Bakersfield, and Leo (Simona) Hupp of Oregon. Also surviving her are 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one remaining sister, Carolyn Morris of Bakersfield, as well as many nieces and nephews. Esther was a 4th generation native Californian
Esther was a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church since 1951. She was very active in her church and served in many ministries there. Her last ministry was making Prayer Blankets since 2006, but her favorite ministry, for which she never felt worthy to do, was being a Eucharistic Minister – bringing the Blessed Sacrament to the “shut-ins.” She gave this up when she turned 90, after serving for over 20 years. She also was in charge of scheduling the other Eucharistic Ministers for their weekly calls.
Esther was never one to be idle, taking many courses such as pottery-making, copper art, oil painting, advanced Spanish, sewing, and lastly, “How to Write your Memoirs.” After retiring in 1987 from her position as a secretary-bookkeeper, she took up quilting and made a quilt for every person in her family – at least 30 quilts. She also crocheted many afghans for her family and friends. Esther’s only regret was that she did not pursue higher education, after graduating in 1941 as a Gold Seal student, so she could get a degree to be a Spanish language teacher. Her sisters called her “The Little Red Hen” for if someone needed help, she was the first one there.
Services for Esther will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church 1800 Bedford Way Bakersfield, Ca 93308. The Rosary is scheduled for 6 pm on March 21; Mass of the Resurrection will be 9:00 am on March 22; Officiating will be Fr. Joseph Warnakulsoorlya and Msgr. Stephen Frost, Services under the direction of Kern River Mortuary . Burial to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Description of a Worthy Woman Proverbs 31: 10-31
10 An excellent wife, who can find her?
For her worth is far above jewels.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
13 She looks for wool and linen,
And works with her [a]hands [b]in delight.
14 She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
15 And she rises while it is still night
And gives food to her household,
And [c]portions to her attendants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
From [d]her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She surrounds her waist with strength
And makes her arms strong.
18 She senses that her profit is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
19 She stretches out her hands to the [e]distaff,
And her [f]hands grasp the spindle.
20 She [g]extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
And [h]supplies belts to the [i]tradesmen.
25 Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the [j]future.
26 She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the [k]teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the activities of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
29 “Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all.”
30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who [l]fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
31 Give her the [m]product of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates.
