Sybil Elizabeth Cross was born to Grandpa Stanley and Grandma Nora Stanley in Sioux City, Iowa, nearly 93 years ago. She passed away quietly in Bakersfield on January 5, 2015. While she was quite young, the family moved to the state of Washington and she spent much of her youth on her grandpa and grandma's farm. That experience cultivated in her a love for growing things. She liked having a small garden and loved flowers. From there, the family relocated to Bakersfield where she attended Bakersfield High School. It was there she met her husband-to- be Wally Cross. She and Wally were married 62 years before his passing in 2002. Sybil and Wally lived in several California communities before settling in Taft in 1949, where they raised their four children--Ron, Charlene, Brad and Darrell. Mother was Taft's first Avon Lady and built a large clientele, so large that Avon split Taft into districts and divided mom's customers up. Most of her customers didn't like that much. After the children were grown and out of the house, Sybil and Wally moved back to Bakersfield where she went to work for the County of Kern, first at Kern Medical Center and later at the Kern County Museum. Mom retired in 1985 and helped us raise her grandchildren.
Sybil was preceded in her passing by grandchildren Craig Cross, Mike Helton and Chris Helton and by great-grandchildren Michael Helton, Josh Cross and Jamie Tweedy. She is survived by her children, Ron Cross, Charlene Costello, Brad Cross and Darrell Cross, as well as 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
We couldn't have asked for a better mother and grandmother. Mom was a great homemaker and was always there for us but told us "don't be late for dinner." She is safely home with Jesus and enjoying the reunion with Wally and all those who were already there.
Thank you, Lord, for giving us such a wonderful gift.
A Celebration of Life, is scheduled for 11:00 am Friday February 13, 2015 at Community Christian Fellowship Church - 700 North Street Taft, CA.
