Edith Rose Luther

February 22, 1935 — June 25, 2013

Edith went home with our heavenly father on June 25, 2013 after several back surgeries and a courageous battle with colon cancer. Her loving husband and family were by her side at home. She was born in Rhode Island and came to California in 1953, following the love of her life George Luther. At 18 they married and made a life in Bakersfield where they both worked hard to build a home and family. They were married for 60 years and had three children.
Edith was preceded in death by her father (Felix), Brother (Morris), mother (Dora), sister (Estelle), and her daughter-in-law (Debbie).
Edith is survived by her loving husband George, daughter Joy and (Joe) Skipper, sons Don and Gary Luther, her Grandchildren- Shelly Luther, Crystal and (Eric) Daniels, Russell Luther, Jeremy Luther, Ryan and (Jamie) Hanshew, Cody and (Tommy) De Jesus. They also had five great-grandchildren: Jonathan, Matthew, Chloe, Lillie, and Maddox. There are numerous others that called her Mom, Me’me`re, (French for My Mother), or Grandma.
Edith worked several jobs in her early years from sewing in a mill in RI to sales jobs at 18 years old when coming to CA. After having children she became a beautician for several years before finding the job she loved working for Oildale Mutual Water Co. until she retired. After retirement George and Edith traveled, and spent much of their time at Pismo Beach. She always said, “The beach is where it’s at!”
Edith loved listening to music, laughing, and sipping wine with her friends, enjoyed eating whole Maine lobsters, and raw clams. They also loved eating out. Their favorite places to eat were Noriega’s, Woolgrower’s, and El Sombrero’s.
Edith was always ready for fun and loved traveling, walking, bike riding, dancing, plays, concerts, rodeos, motorcycle riding, and gardening until her illness slowed her down.
Edith loved life! She always had a smile and many good friends. Blessed with a strong faith in Jesus; she dearly loved her husband, family, and friends. Edith absolutely loved the beach so George built her dream home in Pismo where they retreated for good times with their many friends. She loved traveling; they made several coast to coast trips, took cruises, and flew to Hawaii and Mexico several times.
Edith enjoyed watching NASCAR races, a loyal Kevin Harvick fan. She was a Dodger fan and went to many games with her long-time friend Pat Hubble. She enjoyed Days of Our Lives and Wheel of Fortune.
Edith was an awesome cook and did her best to pass on the many family recipes to Joy and Crystal. The family and friends spent many hours looking at pictures and sharing stories with Edith over the past few months. As Mom’s saying in her beach house goes;
“Remember to cherish each moment for this is what Memories are made of”
Edith had many moments to cherish in her 78 years. Her family and friends will also forever cherish times shared with this truly beautiful woman.
Edith was the balance in the family and was ALWAYS a beautiful LADY! It was important she have her hair, nails, and make-up just right. We will all dearly miss this beautiful, sassy, witty, funny, sweet little French woman.

THANK YOU JESUS from the family, for sharing Edith with us for these 78 memorable years.
As Edith’s daughter, I would like to thank my father, for his compassion, love, and strength during these past 18 months. Dad, you are the strongest man I have ever known. My Dad, Joe, Crystal, Dale, Don, and Gary all made it possible to take Momma home to live out her last days. Mom was in hospitals and four rest homes and I promised her she would never have to be in a facility again. She was able to be home to celebrate their 60th anniversary with family and friends. We then took her to Pismo for two memorable weeks checking off everything on her bucket list. We visited her friends, went out on the Pismo pier, drove on the beach, pushed her wheelchair out in the surf to soak her feet in the Pacific again and she was able to go to the spa to soak and relax multiple times.
I would like to thank Aunt Lee, Uncle Joe, and Linda, for spending several weeks here helping and making wonderful memories. Thank you also to our good friend Carolyn for coming out to CA to help us care for Mom after surgery and then coming back to help get Mom to her beach house for some good times.
Joe, Crystal, Dale, Jamie, Ryan, Don, and Diane; you have all been here to do whatever was needed; words can’t express the love, comfort, and compassion you gave so freely. I would also like to thank Russell, Cody, Jeremy, Shelly, Dora, Deenah, Ronnie, Pat, Debbie, Katie, Paula, Jerry, Linda, Marsha, Fritz, Helen, Leann, and Gary for calling and for visiting Mom and making her smile.
Thank you to my brother Randy for all you have done for our family over the past two years. You and Peggy have helped us all more than you could ever know. Thanks to Kenny for making things happen and to John for Mom’s last outing at the beautiful Crystal Palace.
Finally, I would like to thank Optimal Hospice nurses Brenda, Michele, JR, and Amy for your compassion and Belvee and Deloris for your loving care. Thank you also to Rob and Al at Kern River Family Mortuary.
There are so many people that touched our lives during this time; I know I have forgotten some, I hope they will understand. We all gave our time and love to make Mom’s transition as dignified and comfortable as possible.
As the poem that my late Aunt Estelle wrote says: Whether we called her Mom, Me`me’re, Friend, or Edith she touched our lives with her smile… We will miss you Momma, until we see you again in JESUS, WE LOVE YOU, Joy, Family and Friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Edith on July 3, 2013 at 10:00 a.m at Christ The King Catholic Church 1800 Bedford Way in Bakersfield, Ca .
