Helen Loretta Berglind (Smith) born January 19, 1936 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada passed away peacefully May 24, 2021 in Bakersfield, California at the age of 85.

Helen had a zest for life from the time she was a little girl, becoming a mom, grandma and Gigi were her greatest joy. She loved her family more than life itself and had a heart for loving others that came into her life as she referred to them as her extended family. Helen was caring, kind, creative and always made herself available to offer a helping hand to others. Helen was employed as a secretary for many years in Canada and the United States and in the late 70s Helen ventured out relocating in Oahu, Hawaii opening her own successful furniture business "Wall Systems Hawaii". While living on the island, Helen enjoyed attending jazz festivals, the beautiful beaches, and playing golf. Ten years later, Helen relocated to the mainland to be close to her growing family. Helen loved to try new recipes, she enjoyed knitting while watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, the Bachelor and HGTV and was always up to challenging anyone to an occasional game of cribbage. She loved playing Dino, Tiki Torch and Lobster Larry at her favorite Casinoโ€™s. Each morning Helen would do a daily crossword puzzle on her computer followed by numerous hours playing Pogo games. Helen was a #1 fan of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren cheering them on with their school activities and sports. Helen enjoyed spending time relaxing at the property at Whatcom Meadows. Helen is survived by her 3 children, Brenda (Mike) O'Bannon of Bakersfield, California, Geri (Alan) Porter of Baker City, Oregon, and Marshall (Colleen) Shields of Richmond, B.C., Canada, 15 grandchildren and their spouses, and 29 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents William and Euphemia Smith, former husbands Joe Shields and Bob Berglind, and grandson Ryan Blanchard - Law. Helenโ€™s memories will be cherished as she will be deeply missed by her family and others who loved her. May God wrap his loving arms around her and guide her into her new journey as her work on earth is done. A Celebration to honor Helenโ€™s life will follow later, due to the United States and Canadaโ€™s current border closure.

I almost felt like a celebrity myself that weekend! We were also roommates for a while. Best roommate Ever! We had so much fun! I will always love you Helen. Until we meet again. I remember meeting Helen so many years ago at Marshallโ€™s fastball game. She always had the biggest smile and laugh. Everyone knew Helen, loved seeing her and she loved them back. I always used to say I got into the most trouble and fun when she was visiting and felt like part of the family. My heart goes out to Marshall, Brenda and Geri and all the family. She will be missed but never forgotten โค๏ธ

I have so many great memories of Helen but the one I am most thankful to her for is introducing me to my son's father, Brad. Helen introduced us in Hawaii. Without Helen, I never would have had my wonderful son Chad, nor my awesome grandson Logan. I thank God for Helen bringing such wonderful people into my life also including Brenda, Geri and Marshall. My heart goes out to you my beloved friends. I am truly sorry for your loss but I do rejoice in Heaven's gain and look forward to seeing dear Helen there again one fine day. Peace and blessings be yours. I love you all.

> Hi Marshall, > > I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. > > As a child I remember being introduced to your mother by my cousin Joe and I was quite awestruck by how pretty she was. Really, the prettiest girl I had ever seen. Then, I remember one time visiting my Aunt Evelyn with my parents. I was probably about nine and for some reason I was sulking and refused to get out of the car for the visit. My parents decided to leave me to stew in my own juices, but Helen came out of the house and came to the car and convinced me to join the family party. She really was as charming as she was lovely and that is how I remember her. > > Please pass on my sympathy to Brenda and Geri and the rest of the family. > > Your cousin, > Jim
